SUMMARY:An Evening with Judy Collins
DESCRIPTION:Judy Collins has long inspired audiences with sublime vocals\, boldly vulnerable songwriting\, personal life triumphs\, and a firm commitment to social activism. The award-winning singer-songwriter is esteemed for her imaginative interpretations of traditional and contemporary folk standards and her own poetically poignant original compositions. In the 1960s\, she evoked both the idealism and steely determination of a generation united against social and environmental injustices. Five decades later\, her luminescent presence shines brightly as new generations bask in the glow of her iconic 55-album body of work\, and heed inspiration from her spiritual discipline to thrive in the music industry for half a century. \nMore info:\nhttps://foxtucson.com/event/judy-collins/

SUMMARY:Taj Mahal Sextet
DESCRIPTION:Taj Mahal doesn’t wait for permission. If a sound intrigues him\, he sets out to make it. If origins mystify him\, he moves to trace them. If rules get in his way\, he unapologetically breaks them. To Taj\, convention means nothing\, but traditions are holy. He has pushed music and culture forward\, all while looking lovingly back. \nTaj is a towering musical figure––a legend who transcended the blues not by leaving them behind\, but by revealing their magnificent scope to the world. “The blues is bigger than most people think\,” he says. “You could hear Mozart play the blues. It might be more like a lament. It might be more melancholy. But I’m going to tell you: the blues is in there.” \nIf anyone knows where to find the blues\, it’s Taj. A brilliant artist with a musicologist’s mind\, he has pursued and elevated the roots of beloved sounds with boundless devotion and skill. Then\, as he traced origins to the American South\, the Caribbean\, Africa\, and elsewhere\, he created entirely new sounds\, over and over again. As a result\, he’s not only a god to rock-and-roll icons such as Eric Clapton and the Rolling Stones\, but also a hero to ambitious artists toiling in obscurity who are determined to combine sounds that have heretofore been ostracized from one another. No one is as simultaneously traditional and avant-garde. \nPlease note that Christone “Kingfish” Ingram is no longer able to tour and perform with Taj Mahal as originally scheduled. \nMore info:\nhttps://foxtucson.com/event/taj-mahal-w-kingfish/

SUMMARY:Buddy Guy With Colin James
DESCRIPTION:Buddy Guy is one of the most celebrated blues guitarists of his generation (arguably the most celebrated)\, possessing a sound and style that embodies the traditions of classic Chicago blues while also embracing the fire and flash of rock & roll. Guy began his recording career in 1959 and scored his first hit in 1960 with “First Time I Met the Blues.” He spent much of the next decade a well-regarded journeyman\, praised by peers and blues fans without breaking through to a larger audience; his best album of the ’60s originally didn’t even have his name on it (Junior Wells‘ Hoodoo Man Blues). However\, he found an audience in Europe in the ’70s and rock fans began discovering his work through the endorsements of noted fans Eric Clapton\, Jimi Hendrix\, Jeff Beck\, Keith Richards\, Stevie Ray Vaughan\, and Mark Knopfler. Guy released little material in the ’80s (his best-known album of the decade was 1981’s Stone Crazy\, one of the few that received an American release)\, as he focused on live work. But in 1991\, Guy finally enjoyed a commercial breakthrough with Damn Right\, I’ve Got the Blues\, and since then he’s been one of the biggest names in contemporary blues\, touring frequently and cutting new material on a regular basis. In the 21st century\, Guy was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame\, kept recording (2001’s Sweet Tea\, 2008’s Skin Deep\, and 2010’s Living Proof are high points from this period)\, played an annual residency at his Chicago nightclub Legends\, and even played at the White House\, inviting President Barack Obama on-stage for a duet on “Sweet Home Chicago.” \nMore info:\nhttps://www.rialtotheatre.com/events/buddy-guy/ \n

SUMMARY:Flor de Toloache (Grammy-winning female mariachis)
DESCRIPTION:Having performed at Coachella and a NPR Tiny Desk Concert\, this Latin GRAMMY-winning\, New York-based ensemble is one of the finest all-female mariachi groups on the planet. The group began as a trio named for the delirium-inducing Mexican flower used as a love potion for generations. As it has grown in notoriety\, the band has expanded to as many as ten members depending on the setting\, forming a truly global ensemble with musicians hailing from Mexico\, Puerto Rico\, Dominican Republic\, Cuba\, Australia\, Colombia\, Germany\, Italy\, and the United States. Their highly anticipated new album “Indestructible”\, produced by 11-time Grammy-winner Rafa Sardina (Stevie Wonder\, Lady Gaga\, Rodrigo y Gabriela\, among others)\, premiered via NPR First Listen\, where NPR’s Marisa Arbona-Ruiz said: “Flor de Toloache’s new bilingual album Indestructible pushes the boundaries of mariachi music and its instruments through reimagined pop covers\, originals and original collaborations.” \nMore info:\nhttps://foxtucson.com/event/flor-de-toloache/

SUMMARY:Tootsie
DESCRIPTION:Tootsie is the New York Times Critic’s Pick that has audiences rolling in the aisles in what is being hailed as “Broadway’s funniest new musical!” (The New York Post). With music and lyrics by Tony® Award-winning David Yazbek (The Band’s Visit\, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels) and a laugh-out-loud book by Robert Horn (13 the Musical)\, it comes as no surprise that Tootsie won Best Book of a Musical and received a staggering 11 Tony® Award nominations\, including Best Musical and Best Score. \nMichael Dorsey is a skilled actor with a talent for not keeping a job. Desperate and out-of-work\, Michael makes a last-ditch effort at making his dreams come true…by disguising himself as actress Dorothy Michaels. In a meteoric rise to Broadway stardom\, Dorothy soon has audiences falling at her feet while Michael (disguised as Dorothy) is falling for his co-star\, Julie. It isn’t long before Michael realizes that maintaining his greatest acting success is going to be much harder than he expected. Recommended for ages 10+.
